USEF Pegasus Awards Nominations


Dear USEF Committee Member,


It's time again to submit nominations for the USEF Pegasus Awards.  These are some of the highest honors that USEF has to offer and will be presented during the Pegasus Awards ceremony at the 2009 Annual Convention.  

Included with this newsletter are the criterion for each award, a list of past winners, and a general nomination form.   Nominations can also be made online on the USEF homepage at www.usef.org.  Please click the "Pegasus Awards Nominations" link in the lower left corner and log into your Authorized User Area.   It is preferred that nominations be made online.  

The following dates are the deadlines for submission of nominations to the 2008 USEF Pegasus Awards:

The Ellen Scripps Davis Memorial Breeders' Cup
(Inaugural Year 1998)

In memory of American Saddlebred owner and breeder Ellen Scripps Davis, who died in 1998, USA Equestrian officers instituted a new award, called the Breeder's Cup.  They chose five initial recipients.

Criteria:  The Ellen Scripps Davis Memorial Breeders' Cup recognizes an individual who consistently breeds outstanding show horses.  The award honors the role that unique breeding enterprises have in the development and improvement of show horses.

Selection of Winner:  Nominated by National Breed/Discipline Affiliates and Committees, including the Breeders' Committee; selected and approved by the USEF Executive Committee.

Award: Given at the Pegasus Awards Dinner during the annual meeting.

Timeline:  The Awards Desk will send out reminders to Sport Program Liaisons to initiate tracking potential candidates for The Ellen Scripps Davis Memorial Breeders' Cup.  Mailings will then be sent to National Breed/Discipline Affiliates and Committees containing informational packets and nomination forms.   The deadline for nominations will be November 1st.   Nominations with short bios are forwarded to the USEF Ad Hoc Awards Committee for their November meeting.

The Marty Simensen Award


Donated by Hilltop Farm, this humanitarian award is given to an individual whose life's work reflects Marty's same spirit.

Criteria:  This award is presented to an individual(s) who has demonstrated an unwavering commitment to the protection and welfare of horses over a period of many years and/or have saved equines through an act of courage and resolve during a crisis situation.

Selection Of Winner:  Nominations are submitted by National Breed/ Discipline Affiliates and Committees, as well as, the USEF general membership, via solicitations on the USEF website and in USEF e-communications.  The nominees with biographical information are returned to the Ad Hoc Awards Committee for decision.


Award:  Presented at the Pegasus Awards Dinner during the annual meeting.


Timeline:  National Breed/ Discipline Affiliates and Committees, as well as, the general USEF membership are solicited for nominations with a November 1st deadline for submittal.  At this time nominees along with biographical information will be returned to the Ad Hoc Awards Committee for decision.

Junior Equestrian of the Year
Ruth O'Keefe Meredith Memorial Trophy

Ms. O'Keefe was a valued member of the Federation and a nationally recognized figure in the horse showing world.  She was awarded the Walter B. Devereux Memorial trophy, the Federation's prestigious award.  In April of 1985 the Board of Directors of the Federation established the Ruth O'Keefe Meredith Memorial Trophy for the Junior Equestrian of the Year.

Criteria:  Awarded to a junior member of the Federation in good standing who:

Has competed at one or more USEF-recognized competitions during the last year;
Personifies the virtues of honor, courage, patience, good temper, unselfishness, and sincerity;
Exhibits the qualities of good sportsmanship and integrity;
Exemplifies exceptional talent and dedication to the sport; and
Has made outstanding contributions to equestrian competition.
Selection of Winner:  The Ad Hoc Awards Committee is presented with the list of nominees and biographical information provided by the nominee (a resume listing equestrian and academic accomplishments) and a short letter or essay (topic to be chosen by the Awards Committee).   The committee will narrow down the list of nominees to 3-4 and will interview those individuals.  

Award: trophy given at the Pegasus Awards Dinner during the annual meeting.  

Timeline:  Mailings will be sent to National Breed/Discipline Affiliates and Committees containing informational packets and nomination forms with a deadline of November 1st.  After this, all the nominees will be contacted and asked for their resumes.  The deadline for submittal will be November 10th.  Once received, the resumes are then sent to each of the committee members and a conference call will be set up (late-November) to discuss and choose the nominees to be interviewed.  Around the beginning of December, the nominees may be interviewed by the panel and the winner chosen immediately following.  At this time an official notice will be sent to the winner.

Equestrian of the Year & Annual Equestrians of Honor Awards

Criteria:  Awarded to the horseman or horsewoman who has excelled above all others in equestrian competition for the current year, while demonstrating superior sportsmanship and dedication to the principles, vision, and mission of the United States Equestrian Federation.  


Selection of Winner and Timeline:
 In August, the Awards Desk will send out reminders to Sport Program Liaisons to initiate tracking potential candidates for Equestrian of the Year.  Mailings will be sent to National Breed/Discipline Affiliates and Committees containing informational packets and nomination forms.   Nominations will include the following:
Short biography Highlights of past accomplishments
Current year's competition accomplishments
Multiple nominations may be made throughout the competition year by the National Affiliates, the USEF Breed/Discipline committees, and the USEF Sport Programs and Communications staff.  
Nominations close November 15th.   USEF staff will verify information provided on the nomination form.  Nominations will then be forwarded to the Ad Hoc Awards committee.   The committee will meet to select the Equestrians of Honor.  The nominee will be responsible for forwarding any accomplishments from the date of the nomination deadline to November 24th.
All sub-category semi-finalists are notified within 5 days of selection, by letter, of their categorical wins and invited to accept their awards in person during the Pegasus Dinner at the Federation Annual Meeting.  The nominees' names (with short bios) will be posted on the website for voting on as defined below.  

The semi-finalists will be voted on in secret ballot by the following three blocs:

General Membership via the USEF internet voting site
USEF Board of Directors by email & fax
Media as represented by official list in Marketing by email solicitation
Voters will rank the semi-finalists 1st, 2nd, and 3rd.  Duplicate or incorrect ballots are void. Voting closes December 3.  Votes tabulate as follows:
           1st = 5 points
           2nd = 3 points
           3rd = 1 point

The 3 top finalists in each bloc are determined and then assigned new value points based on their ranking within their respective blocs for final tabulation as follows:
           1st = 3 points
           2nd = 2 points
           3rd = 1 point

The candidate with the most points will be Equestrian of the Year.  In case of a tie, the candidate with the most 1st places in the bloc ranking wins, then the most 2nd places, then the most 3rd places until the winner is determined.  

Award:  All subcategory semifinalists (Equestrians of Honor) given their awards at the Pegasus Awards Dinner during the annual meeting.  The Equestrian of the Year will be announced to the public during the Pegasus Awards Dinner.
