Paso Fino Horse World

Your Future PFHW Magazine
From PFHA's Media Department

As most of you know, in the past 23 years of its history, the PFHW magazine has been managed and produced by several outsourced printing and publishing firms. Several weeks ago, your Paso Fino Horse Association made a decision to bring its membership magazine in house, and under one roof, allowing it to be fully managed and produced by your Association. This is an enormous leap forward for the benefit of the breed we love and for all members of the Association!
The July/August 2008 PFHW is the final issue produced and delivered by the current publishing firm. Beginning August 1, 2008, your PFHW will be managed by your Association office and its newest employee, and seasoned PFHW editor, Stephanie Dunkin. She is your new contact person for PFHW editorial and advertising (display and classified) placement, and can be reached at a new number, (205) 445-3317 and new email address, media@pfha.org. For PFHW billing, payment and subscriptions, your contact is the Association office, (813) 719-7777.
We are presently working very hard to establish the best PFHW advertising rates for members and to determine the 2008 and 2009 issue frequency. Once the PFHW's frequency and advertising rates are set, we'll make every effort to deliver this information to you. In the meantime, if you have any questions regarding PFHW, please don't hesitate to contact Stephanie or Association office.
"In The Spirit of Family"

Message From Alice Page, Chairman of the Professional Paso Fino Trainer's Association
Dear Paso Fino Members and Friends,

On behalf of the Professional Paso Fino Trainer's Association I appeal to you with a message concerning our dear friend and fellow trainer, Juan Carlos Iriarte.  I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for all of your previous support; and remind you  exactly what it is that we do.  One of the purposes of the PPFTA is to serve the interest, opinions and "needs" of the Professional trainers involved in our Paso Fino Breed.

Two and a half years ago, Juan Carlos was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia or ALL.  Leukemia is a cancer of the blood.  ALL is the most common type of leukemia in children but it is rare among adults.  Throughout all the countless rounds of chemotherapy, radiation, a stem cell transplant and a most recent battle with an invasive fungal infection that caused him to lose his left eye; Juan has maintained a positive and faithful spirit, relying on the support of his family, friends, and ultimately his unshakeable faith in God.

In the Paso Fino Horse Association we all are part of one family.  It is in the spirit of family that I want to share with you two ways in which you can help.

First, please consider registering to become a bone marrow donor.  There are about 6,000 patients searching the National Donor Program Registry (NMDP) for a donor each day. One in four patients will not find a match.  It's often difficult to locate a match because tissue characteristics are so specific. Patients in need of a marrow transplant are most likely to match with someone from the same ethnic group.   There are two ways to register as a potential donor:
·        Attend a Bone Marrow Donor Drive
·        Request a Typing Kit by mail

For more info:  www.bonemarrowregistry.com

Secondly, the PPFTA is sponsoring a benefit raffle of a Paso Fino Colt.   If you would like to help Juan Carlos, please consider purchasing a raffle ticket.  You can select to keep the colt or auction it off at the time of the drawing.  The drawing will take place at this year's National Championship show in Perry, Ga. on September 19th.   Tickets are being sold for $5.00 each or you can purchase a book of ten for $40.00 or 30 tickets for $100.00.  Because time is of the essence, you can help immediately by visiting the following website: www.ranchoeldestino.com  and purchase your tickets on line.

Your contribution will go a long way in helping to alleviate the financial burden that accompanies a health crisis of this magnitude.  If you are able to sell tickets from your farm or at upcoming horse shows, please contact us.  If you would like to request your tickets via mail or would like to make a donation, make checks payable to:

           Benefit for Juan Carlos Iriarte
           2071 Sigmon Dairy Road
           Newton, NC 28658

For more information, contact:  Judy Laney at 864-585-4049 or jjlaney@charter.net or visit the website: www.ranchoeldestino.com.

Thank you so much for being willing to help our fellow trainer and friend.

American Horse Council

The American Horse Council (AHC) is encouraging member organizations to order 2008 election guides, "Getting Involved in the 2008 Elections," a federal election guide for the horse industry.  The guide, which is available through the AHC, stemmed from the program at the AHC's National Issues Forum in Washington explaining how the horse industry could take advantage of the 2008 federal elections to get more involved with their elected representatives.  The guide discusses why the horse industry should get involved in the upcoming elections and ways individuals and organizations can go about doing so.  It includes sections on why candidates care about the horse community, being able to communicate issues of importance to the horse industry, getting to know the candidates, volunteering and fundraising, as well as knowing the laws governing political activities.  The AHC hopes this guide will be an important resource for all members of the horse community who wish to play a greater role in the democratic process.  Copies of "Getting Involved in the 2008 Elections" can be ordered by contacting the AHC at (202) 296-4031 or by email at ahc@horsecouncil.org.

Ribbon Presenters submitted by Babs Buffington

Would you like to share that special moment with your youth rider and present them with their ribbon in the ring?  As of this moment, we have only one person who has signed up to present ribbons at Nationals for the first 3 days.  Our youth deserve our congratulations and a full line up of folks to help them claim their prize.  Being a ribbon presenter gives you an amazing perspective of the show, the closet thing to being on the horses during their class.  Shifts are short, requirements are minimal, and the fun is unlimited!  Please help us make Nationals special for exhibitors this year, and make yourself available to give a smiling winner their ribbon.  If you would like to share the moment with someone special to you in the ring, or if you can present ribbons for a short shift, please contact Babs Buffington at:

Registration Special

REGISTRATION SPECIAL For HORSES OVER 720 DAYS OF AGE

The Registration Department is once again offering a special price for horses over 720 days of age.  This time this offer will be done in stages by the sex of the applicant horse.  The first horses this special will be offered to are mares which fall into this age category.  The applications for the mares over 720 days old must be postmarked between October 1, 2008 and October 24, 2008.  The next group this special will be offered to is stallions over 720 days of age, and then the geldings over 720.  .

The dates when the stallions' special will be held are December 1 through December 26, 2008.  The special for the geldings will be March 2, 2009 to March 28, 2009.

The application for MARES over 720 days old must be postmarked between October 1, 2008 and October 24, 2008.  The current membership rate for this age of horse is $495.  But for this registration special the rate will be $250 which will include a DNA kit.  If there is a transfer at the time of registration, the normal transfer fee will apply.

This first special rate will apply to only those registration applications if the horse to be registered is a MARE and the application is postmarked from October 1 to October 24, 2008.  Any other postmark or registrations in the PFHA office prior to October 1st are not eligible for the reduced rate.  If a mare's application is postmarked after October 24, 2008, the reduced rate will not apply.

The registry rules that will apply to these registrations will be the current rules from the 2008 rule book. - the new rule book which will be coming out shortly.  This includes, but is not limited to, the sire, dam and application horse must be DNA tested, the applicant horse must qualify as an offspring of the reported sire and dam, correct signatures based on the ownership history on file with PFHA must be received, and all fees are paid.

The recorded owner(s) or lessee(s) at the time of foaling MUST be current member(s) of the Association for the special rate to be applied.  Otherwise, the non member fee at the full rate will apply.  Again, if a transfer is requested at the time of registration, the regular transfer fee will apply.

There will be only one (1) additional information letter sent out if all the required items are not present when processing begins on these registrations. We will send a copy of that letter to anyone else who may need to sign or provide information to complete your registration.  You will have 90 days from the date of the additional letter to provide the Association with any missing items or fees.  If all requirements have not been met within the 90 days, we will terminate the process and all fees paid will be forfeited.  There are no refunds of fees for registration of horses submitted under this special offer.

So take advantage of this offer to get some of your older horses registered and save over $300.
