In Loving Memory
On June 10, 2008, long time PFHA member and breeder/trainer of Paso Fino Horses, Gordon Hall, Jr., of New Colombia, PA, was killed in a motorcycle accident during a severe thunder storm in upstate New York. Mr. Hall is survived by his wife, Brenda, who is on our Recreation Rider Committee, and their son, Colby, as well as by many other family members and numberous friends and co-workers. He will be missed.
Ask the Rec Rider
We are adding anew section to our Recreational Rider Report - ASK THE REC RIDER - please submit your questions to committee member, Lindsay Campbell at vistalargo@aol.com and THE COMMITTEE will do our best to answer your questions. Listed below are questions that have been asked and answered for the July issue of the Recreation Rider Report.
Q. "Why does PFHA require so much written documentation for horses to get pointsin Competitve Trail, Endurance Trail, and Pleasure Trail?"
A. PFHA wants to ensure that its trail programs are fair, equal and safe for all participants. Before a sanctionaling/approval process was put into place some people were "organizing" backyard endurance rides in particular. There were no veternarians, no timers, no professional officials at the rides. Before long people who did participate in professional rides such as those put on by AERC (American Endurance Ride Conference) began questioning the safety of the backyard rides. This eventually came to the attention of some trail member in PFHA and they drafted more stringent rules to govern these PFHA programs. One of the ways to ensure the legitimacy and safety of the rides was to require proog that the ride actually was an organized ride and that it was run under rules such as those for AERC in endurance and NATRC (North American Trail Ride Conference) in competitive trail. PFHA forms, signed by ride managers, and copies of score cards and ride entry forms were decided upon as the way to most effectively do this. NOTE: As of September 1, 2008 a copy of the ride entry for will no longer be required, only the proper PFHA form and a copy of the score card will be needed, along with the $10 fee.
Q. "Is it possible for PFHA to receive a verified record of each horse's mileage from AERC and award points based on that?"
A. It could, for mileage and first best condidtion. However, PFHA also awards points for final impression score at the completion of the ride and points for second through tenth place in best condition standing (AERC only records the first place best condition, it does not record any other placement.) Therefore, forms and copies of score cards would still be required for points to be awarded for final score and placement other than first in best condidtion. NOTE: The Recreation Rider Committee will be looking at ways for those who do not want points, but who do want recognition for mileage, to participate, possibly with no forms involved. Stay tuned.
Be sure to check out Lindsay Campbell's article on Trail Riding in the May/June issue of Paso Fino Horse World. Good advice Lindsay!!
LIFE IS AN ADVENTURE!!
This is another new section we are adding to our Recreation Rider Report. We will be asking our PFHA members to help provide information for this section. it is reserved for the wild and wooly, (wish I was twenty years younger!) not your everyday recreational rider experience. Sometimes just getting up in the saddle is an adventure for me but that is not what we are looking for!! Listed below are two such adventures that have been sent to me to be included in the Report. - Sue Niebling
Check these sites out:
Equitrekking (www.equitrekking.com)
Experience equestrian travel as Equitrekking takes viewers on exhilarating horseback adventures around the globe. Whether a ride on the beaches of southern Spain, a trek through northern California's Redwood Forest, or saddling up at a working cattle ranch in New Mexico, viewers experience adventure, exotic destinations and the thrill of exploring the world on horseback. For both arm-chair travelers and those preparing to take their equestrian adventure, Equitrekking transports viewers around the world.
The Santa Fe Trail Horse Race Endurance Ride (www.sfthorserace.com)
This ride/race is scheduled for August 31 through September 13, 2008. (If not enough time to prepare this year - consider next year!!) The Great Santa Fe Trail Horse Race Endurance Ride's goal is to establish a world class equine event covering 515 miles along the historic Santa Fe Trail. They are working to bring together horses, the history of the Santa Fe Trail, and the communities along the trail, to develop an event that will draw the world's attention (what a terrific way to show the versatility of our Paso Finos). They hope you will find their website interesting and informative. They want you to become part of The Great Santa Fe Trail Horse Endurance Ride as a spectator, volunteer, or participant. The ride is sanctioned by the AERC. Check it out!!!

VA Presidential Trail Ride
The upcoming trail ride will be at www.rockyhollowhorsecamp.com near the Mount Rogers National Recreational Park, on July 26th. Anyone interested in going just needs to either contact the camp at 1(888) 644-0014 or Candy Hurd at (423) 257-3611 or ducktownfarms@aol.com When you call the camp for reservations, be sure to tell them you are with the VA Presidential Paso Fino group. I look forward to the ride, it should be most pleasurable this time of year. It is pretty high altitude and should not be too hot. I do recommend that your horses have shoes or easy boots due to some rocky terrain. The park does have wild ponies and beautiful Mountain laurel, and wild blueberry bushes that should have berries!
Thanks,
Candy Hurd

Re: Equestrian Trail Manuals Released
Two publications concerning the design, construction and maintenance of equestrain trails, trailheads and campgrounds are now available.
The Equestrian Design Guidebook for Trails, Trailheads and Campgrounds, written by Jan Hancock in conjuction with U.S. Forest Service, has been released by the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA). This manual provides trail design and contruction details, while explaining the particular physical and psychological needs of equines and their riders that necessitate them. The information in this guidebook is applicable to trails at all levels of development and locations.
Recreational Horse Trails in Rural and Wildland Areas: Design, Contruction, and Maintenance, was written by Gene W. Wood, in conjunction with 16 contributing authors. This guidebook concentrates specifically on horse trail development in rural and wild land areas. An emphasis is place on trail design, contruction and placement that will make long term use by equestrians possible. The American Horse Council was involved in facilitating the funding of this book.
Equestrian accessible trails are of the utmost importance to the horse community. Both of these books are needed and will be of great help to recreational riders throughout the country.
Equestrian Design Guidebook for Trails, Trailheads, and Campgrounds is offered free of charge online at FHWA webiste http://www.fhwa.dot.gov/enviroment/fspubs/07232816/index.htm or a hard copy can be ordered through the FHWA Report Center: Recreational Trails Program Reports Order Form.
Recreational Horse Trails in Rural and Wildland Areas: Design, Construction, and Maintenance, is available for a fee from Clemson University's Forestry and Natural Resources website at www.clemson.edu/forestres/.
