Why do so many work pasos on concrete

Well I know why. They make them go round and round on concrete so they step short in order not to fall which makes them look fino. Also for the sound. Dont they understand the damage they cause everytime you make a paso gait on concrete. Why dont more owners stand up to this practice. Its one of the reasons I think that our fino stallions just dont last long that and they are fully trained at 30 months.

Do they work them like that all of the time, or just when someone is taking video, or looking at them to buy?

Adam!  is like with every other breed!  You will find a numerous of reasons....but it boils down in my opinion to 3 main reasons.
1. Ignorance
2. The eager to win
3. Make money *****

I will never use a CONCRETE PICADERO for Tornear.....  the same way I will never buy a horse based on their movements on the same!!

I will never buy a horse that will be exhibit on concrete either!  I need to see their full potential on soft surface!  otherwise, BYE BYE!

Our gait sounds are addicted!  and many time just hearing the sound of Ta Ca Ta Ca is a high...........

I do agree, many owners need to be fully aware of the GREAT DAMAGE hard surface can result on their legs period!

Now!  lets not forget stalls concrete flooring..... and how damaging those can also be to any horse (all breeds)

I will never forget in in the year 2002....... at the Nationals! I saw a huge majority of horses standing in their  CONCRETE FLOOR stalls after very long hauls (12 hours in my case) with only 4 bags of shavings!  WOW!  I will never forget my reaction and what i did! and trust me!  Show officials  HEARD ME! loud and cleared.  BY THE WAY, NOTHING WAS DONE....  and we will remain in Perry till 2010!!!!!

I particular don't agree with our champions being damaged at early age.  I own a extremely great FINO CHAMPION/TRAIL HORSE!  and he still sound! at 17!
I also don't think you can make a FINO Horse, if the horse doesn't have it! not even Harry Potter can make this happen... One thing they can do is TRICK on the horse!  but then again, In my opinion, is not the horse, is the LACK OF EDUCATION on behalf of the trainer! (no matter how well known they are.....  and not generalizing)...........  That is called HABILITADORES!

Through the years, I have noticed a huge  OWNER improvements........... In my opinion,  Trainers (not all) will soon need to board the same wagon!  and improve their abilities.... before can set this breed a step higher in the  EQUINE INTERNATIONAL WORLD!

Kerry!  in my area!  we work all FINO horses in the trails!  soft surface!

The concrete is mainly used only for exhibiting the horse!  (few minutes) or for the rider to verify the sound!

Okay...I think doing it all the time is bad...but I don't think every time you see it, you should automatically assume that the horse is subjected to it daily.

I agree!!

I will never think that a damaged horse could ever take the  daily hard work.

I think it is all the time. Have you seen the young horses work on the pole and whats around the pole. Its concrete. Thats right they do work the young horses on concrete. Watch some videos of them going round and round then look at what they are on. Someone didnt spend the money on that set up only to use it for film.

I agree!  I really don't like seeing it either and will never support it.  Is also a crime to even do tight small circles at a very early age and even worse on concrete! Rolling Eyes

But on the bright side!  I see more and more people getting educated! and demanding proper handling of their horses and trainers being more concerned of the consequences concrete can lead! !  THAT IS A GOOD THING!

Look at everything that can be damaged if not properly handle! and if one of the many gets damaged..... GOOD LUCK, and  not to you!  BUT TO THE HORSE!   The DOMINO effect!

Oh!  and Knees!  great impact creating a potential  for HUGE problems!

I agree that it is very bad for all horses to be put on concrete or any real hard surfaces for long distance or continually up and down to show off to the crowd.  We are lucky to have a trainer here at our farm where we can watch what is going on, we DO NOT allow for our horses to be run up and down on concrete, I hate to see that. We do look at our babies on the pole but it is for a few short circles on both sides. When your horses are being trained somewhere else you just don't know what is going on with your horses at all.

I agree!  I have known and know......   very well respect honest trainers!  But.....   I have seen the worse too!

That is why is so important for owners to get involved in the process... ask questions, demands answers, contact vets, universities, test the level of education your trainer claim to have!   not only with WORDS. but with action............  too many people claiming knowledge.........they don't possess.  Wink

Trainers should be fully knowledge and experienced with our breed, I say it cause I have been there!!!!!  and will debate anyone on that matter Twisted Evil !  Don't listen to the TALK!  I have been through the WALK!

Also!  listen to your gut.......and pay close attention to your horse......

Advise!  don't ever try to change your trainer ideas, but always feel free to change from trainer....
