Colombian Horses/semen and embryo questionsOk, I have lots of other questions too.
I spend several hours a week looking at videos or websites or forums referrencing Colombian paso horses. Hopefully this isn't out of place in this forum, but my interest is not simply paso fino, but any modalities of Colombian horse, not even excluding criollo animals.
My first question is, about semen shipment. Is it possible to ship semen from stallions in Colombia, to the US to insemenate mares here? (I didn't spell that right did I?) I know it's a bit far and the airports may be limited, but I'd just like to know if it's possible, and if so, what kind of process is involved?
The other question is about embryos. Felix has told me that I can get them in a recepient mare. But I was wondering, if they use draft mares for recepients of TBs and QHs, why couldn't I use my broodmare to recieve an embryo? I'd hate to have another mouth to feed forever when she's a perfectly fine girl, and so easy to deal with. When thinking of my future with horses, I like to plan things intelligently, if I can. I have her next three foals planned, but then the 4th foal would be open. I don't want to ride her, she makes eeyore look like a Derby horse.
Then the last one would be, how do I get pedigrees, and more information about horses, that for instance I might find on youtube, or suscaballos, or even pasotv or whatever, I see all these horses i want to research, but so far it's been quite difficult.
Any advise to contribute?

Hey Britz! sorry! I have been running like a chicken without a head!!! and I still have a few things pending to mail you!!! I have not forgotten!!!
I also need to contact the breeder in Colombia to get the information that I promised you!
Last I heard! in reference the recepients mares! was on La Mundial, Henry, the representative of Arafat! told me the following!, they will ship the recepient mare to us here in the USA!, I dont know! if they are TB or QH.......or a non register criolla mare! from pasture!!!!!.
I am also aware that Dr Davila has sent some mares to Colombia carrying embryos from local horses here!!!! maybe those are the same mares that they will be shipping back to the USA!!!!
There is no problem! if you ship a mare to Colombia to get in foal! and then reverse her back!!!! as long as you are willing to pay! between four to five thousand each way!!!!!
Maybe! the first place where you need to start searching will be the USDA! and the Agriculture department!!! maybe!!! shipping just SEMEN will be easier! and the way to go! BUT!!!! I dont know! if the system has change any! lets not forget! that the handling and time on live semen! is a great factor!!!!!, I dont know if they are allowing human delivery! NOW!
Maybe Frozen Semen! will be easier! BUT!!! again!!! I think the USDA and the AG can clear that for all of us!!!!
PLEASE LET US KNOW THE OUTCOME!!!!!! I think you have a very valuable! question!!!!that could be very helpful! to find out the latest!
Saludos!

Here's the first thing I have found referencing it. I'll keep researching it because I'm very interested in thinking about doing something in a few years.

Felix, don't worry about anything, I know you're very busy. Me too! I'll see what all I can find out. Perhaps I can contact some vets specializing in this. I'll try that. I am almost certain it's been done with Andalusians.

I think Colombia was put on their RESTRICTED LIST! causing it impossible to import semen.....

Felix, its been far more difficult, even in the US, to ship semen since 9/11. Before that, a stallion owner could collect and ship via taking directly to the airlines themselves in a matter of hours. However, now one must use overnight/am FedEx, because being its a "biological," the facility must be inspected by the airline, and they wont come unless you do an appropriate amount of business to warrant them sending an inspector, which is only, of course, the larger vet centers that do volumes of AI, and usually multi-breed facilities.
Perhaps in a few years, things will loosen up again.
To the best of my knowledge, embryo transfer is done with the donor and recipient in the same area, to make the transfer as swift as possible to optimize success. Personally, I'd rather use Paso mares to be mothers, but perhaps they use large breed mares to optimize embryo growth, ease of foaling, and also, less chance of rupturing the mare during implantation.

I've contacted a vet that specializises in imported embryos and International AI.
I've also found that Canada is doing a great deal more with it. I expect it all to continue to increase.
As far as donor mares, I see the sense in close vacinity. I would perhaps think about bringing in a Colombian mare if I new I had a person interested in her after foaling. My interest in using my mare, who's a QH, not a draft, is simply that she has a home for life, and I want to continue breeding her. I simply thought that it might be a future use for her. I do have a friend who may use her at some point to carry an embryo for her mare who is older and for many reasons cannot raise a foal.
I'm thinking that I'm going to hope for frozen semen options to free up. Or, who knows maybe one of the Colombian studs I love may come here for a time or something.
I'm thinging it may be a better idea to look into offsprings of the trocha horse instead, and may be a better idea in a long run anyway as I can see them first. Just have to work harder overcoming the language culture barrier
