BLM rounding up opinions on wild horses

   The Bureau of Land Management's National Wild Horse and Burro Advisory Board will hold a one-day meeting in Reno on Nov. 17, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., to discuss issues relating to the management, protection, and control of wild horses and burros on Western public rangelands. The meeting is at the Silver Legacy Resort Casino, 50 E. Fourth St.
   The advisory board works with the BLM to manage wild horses and burros to ensure healthy herds at levels consistent with the land's capacity to support them. The public may address the board at the appropriate time during the meeting, approximately 3 p.m.
   Individuals who want to make a statement should register with the BLM by noon on Nov. 17. Speakers must submit a written copy of their statement at the meeting. If you are unable to attend, you may submit a written statement no later than Nov. 12 to: Bureau of Land Management, National Wild Horse and Burro Program, WO-260, Attention: Ramona DeLorme, 1340 Financial Blvd., Reno, NV 89502. You may also submit a statement by e-mail to: Ramona DeLorme@blm.gov.
   Those submitting comments electronically should include the identifier "WH&B" in the subject of their message and their name and address in the body of the message.

   Nature Center
   Get a close look at snakes, birds, spiders, and other animal species native to the region during Wildlife Wednesday on Oct. 29. Learn about unique characteristics, habitats, behavior and more from ONC specialists. Begins at 3 p.m. and is suitable for all ages. Cost is free to members; for others, it's $3 adults and $1.25 children.
   Local artist Adele Greenleaf will help you create a simple sewn, full-sized journal for keeping field and garden notes on Nov. 6, 6-8:30 p.m. For ages 12 and up; cost is $25 for members/ $30 others in addition to $5 material fee. Pre-registration required by Nov. 5.

   » The Great Salt Lake Audubon is hosting the following events. As always, carpooling is encouraged and contributions toward gas money are appreciated (suggested donations are $5 per person for round trips of less than 50 miles, $10 per person for longer trips).    Backcountry ski clinic
   If you want to learn more about the gear needed to backcountry ski, the Wasatch Mountain Club is hosting a gear clinic on Oct. 29, 7-9 p.m., at the home of Clark and Holley Richards, 2470 E. Kentucky Ave. (4730 South). The clinic will show different kinds of skis and boots needed for backcountry use to give you a better idea of what to shop for or rent and what is a reasonable deal at a gear swap.    Avalanche classes
   The American Avalanche Institute's level one course presents basic information about weather, snowpack and terrain factors that contribute to avalanche hazard. Students learn how to dig snow pits, identify weak and strong layers, and practice route finding. Level one courses begin with either one- or two-evening sessions, and then two full days with emphasis on field work. Evening sessions run from 6-9 p.m. Courses are half classroom and half field.    Free REI clinics
   » The Utah Avalanche Center Backcountry and Cross Country Swap is Nov. 1, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., at the East Millcreek store, 3300 E. 3300 South. Admission is $5. There is a $2 per item charge to enter anything in the swap. Equipment may be dropped off Oct. 30 and 31, 6-8 p.m. For more information, call 801-365-5522.
   » Utah Avalanche Center is hosting a snow and avalanche workshop on Nov. 1, 1 p.m., at the Depot, 13 N. 400 West, Salt Lake City. The seminar is geared toward professionals and recreationists, and will focus on avalanche mitigation, forecasting, snowpit evaluation, advances in beacon technology and rescue techniques.
